Inheriting and Gifting Premium Number Plates in the UAE
02 February 2026
A guide to the legal and procedural steps for transferring plate ownership through inheritance or as a gift.
Gifting a Premium Plate
Gifting a high-value number plate is a grand gesture in the UAE. The process is similar to a standard transfer but often requires both parties to be present at a licensing center with valid Emirates IDs.
It's important to ensure that all outstanding fines on both the plate and the vehicles are cleared before the transfer can be processed.
The Inheritance Process
In the event of inheritance, premium plates are considered part of the estate. The legal heirs must provide a death certificate and a court-issued inheritance certificate to the RTA to claim or transfer the plate.
If there are multiple heirs, they must agree on who will take ownership or decide to sell the plate and split the proceeds, following the legal distribution of the estate.
